TSA Rules for Bottles & Jars

Can You Bring Glass on a Plane? What Actually Matters Is What’s Inside

Yes — glass itself is allowed on planes, in both carry-on and checked baggage. Airport security does not restrict glass as a material; it restricts contents. An empty glass bottle or jar can fly in your carry-on without any volume limit. Problems only start when the container holds a liquid, gel or alcohol — and those rules are about milliliters and ABV, not about glass.

Glass in carry-on baggage: the 100 mL rule applies to contents

Under the TSA’s liquids rule (and its equivalents in the EU, UK and most countries), each liquid in carry-on baggage must be in a container of 3.4 oz / 100 mL or less, with all containers fitting in one resealable quart-size bag. Three practical consequences for glass:

Glass containers in carry-on baggage

Situation

Allowed in carry-on?

Why

Empty glass bottle or jar, any size

Yes

No liquid, so the liquids rule doesn’t apply

Glass container of 100 mL or less, filled

Yes, in the liquids bag

Within the 3.4 oz / 100 mL limit

Filled glass bottle over 100 mL (e.g. 750 mL wine)

No — checked bag or duty-free only

The container size exceeds the limit, even if half-empty

Glass jar of food that is spreadable (honey, jam, sauce)

Only ≤ 100 mL

Spreadables count as liquids/gels

Note the subtlety brands should design around: the rule is judged on the container’s labeled capacity, not the remaining product. A 200 mL bottle with 50 mL left is still refused. This is precisely why 100 mL (3.38 US fl oz) has become the global standard for travel-format packaging — and why travel retail lines are developed in 30, 50 and 100 mL glass.

Glass in checked baggage: allowed, with alcohol limits

Checked baggage has no liquids-volume rule for ordinary products, but alcohol is regulated by ABV:

Alcohol in checked baggage (TSA / IATA general rules)

Alcohol strength

Checked baggage

Condition

24% ABV or less (wine, beer)

Allowed, no volume limit

Normal packing precautions

Over 24% up to 70% ABV (most spirits)

Limited to 5 L per passenger

Must be in unopened retail packaging

Over 70% ABV

Prohibited

Applies to carry-on too

Duty-free is the exception that lets full-size bottles into the cabin: liquids bought airside are sealed in a tamper-evident bag with the receipt and can exceed 100 mL, though connecting flights through another security checkpoint can void this — keep the bag sealed until final destination.

Rules summarized here reflect general TSA and IATA practice; individual airlines and countries can be stricter. Check your carrier and departure airport before flying.

How to pack glass bottles and jars so they land intact

Glass survives flights well when it’s packed the way it ships commercially: immobilized and separated. Wrap each bottle in clothing or bubble wrap, keep glass-to-glass contact impossible, place bottles upright in the suitcase’s center surrounded by soft items, and tape jar lids or bag them against pressure seepage — cabin-hold pressure changes don’t break glass, but they can loosen a poorly torqued closure. Purpose-made bottle sleeves with absorbing liners are worth it for wine and spirits.

There’s a packaging-engineering reason airline holds rarely break bottles: commercial glass is designed to survive far worse. A standard spirits bottle ships through palletized freight, withstanding sustained vertical loads and repeated handling shocks. The vulnerabilities in a suitcase are the same ones we design against industrially — point impacts on the shoulder and heel, and glass-on-glass contact. Solve those two and a checked bottle is safer than most travelers assume.

Case study: when a bottle is too heavy to clear security screening

Glass and flight security can collide in a less obvious way than the liquids rule — and one of our own client projects shows it. A spirits brand came to GlassRock with a premium bottle weighing 780 g of net glass. The thick, dense glass mass was repeatedly flagged by explosive-detection screening equipment at US transit security checkpoints: the scanners could not resolve the contents through that much material, triggering systematic manual inspections — and, when inspection wasn’t possible, travelers were forced to surrender the bottles. A luxury product that customers literally could not take home.

    <g>

      <text x="100" y="225" text-anchor="middle" font-family="system-ui,sans-serif" font-size="14" font-weight="700" fill="#8C2F1B">780 g</text>
      <text x="100" y="20" text-anchor="middle" font-family="system-ui,sans-serif" font-size="12" fill="#4A5A54">Original — thick walls</text>
    </g>
    <g stroke="#A9631F" stroke-width="2.5" fill="none">

    </g>
    <text x="225" y="108" text-anchor="middle" font-family="system-ui,sans-serif" font-size="12" font-weight="600" fill="#A9631F">same shape</text>
    <g>

      <text x="345" y="225" text-anchor="middle" font-family="system-ui,sans-serif" font-size="14" font-weight="700" fill="#1D3A31">680 g</text>
      <text x="345" y="20" text-anchor="middle" font-family="system-ui,sans-serif" font-size="12" fill="#4A5A54">Redesigned — optimized walls</text>
    </g>

Same external silhouette, 100 g less glass: wall distribution was re-engineered so the bottle clears security screening without changing the brand’s shelf identity.

The instinctive fixes were all bad ones: changing the bottle shape would sacrifice a shelf identity the brand had spent years building; accepting the status quo meant losing the travel and gifting channel entirely. The engineering answer was lightweighting without redesigning: we re-engineered the glass distribution — walls, shoulder and heel — to bring the bottle down to 680 g while keeping the external shape identical. Three problems solved with one mold:

Results of the 780 g → 680 g lightweighting project

Dimension

Outcome

Security screening

Reduced glass mass cleared detection equipment — no more flagged or surrendered bottles

Brand identity

External silhouette unchanged; consumers see the same bottle

Unit cost

~13% less glass per bottle, directly reducing material and freight cost

Tooling investment

$1,800 mold opening — roughly one fifth of typical Western tooling costs

The broader lesson for brands: glass weight is a design variable, not a fixed property of a shape. A well-distributed 680 g bottle can be as strong and as premium in hand as a 780 g one — and unlike the heavier version, it travels.

For brands: designing glass packaging for travel

Search data shows travelers asking this question by the thousands every month — and their behavior shapes packaging strategy. If your product is bought as a gift or souvenir, three formats decide whether it can travel: 100 mL or under for carry-on compliance, miniatures (50 mL) for multipacks that clear security anywhere, and duty-free exclusive sizes (1 L is common) for airside retail. Wall distribution, shoulder profile and heel design determine impact resistance more than raw glass weight; a well-designed lightweight bottle can outperform a heavier one with poor glass distribution. See our complete bottle size guide for how these formats fit a range strategy.

Developing a travel-retail or miniature line?
GlassRock manufactures 30 mL to 100 mL glass bottles and jars for travel formats, plus duty-free and gift-set packaging. Empty glass containers of any size are allowed in carry-on and checked baggage. The liquids rule only applies once there’s liquid inside.

Can I bring a glass water bottle on a plane?

Yes, if it’s empty at security. Fill it after the checkpoint. A filled glass bottle over 100 mL will be refused at screening.

Can you take glass candles or cosmetic jars in hand luggage?

Solid candles in glass are allowed. Creams, gels and balms in glass jars count as liquids/gels and must be 100 mL or under in carry-on.

How many glass bottles of wine can I check?

Wine is under 24% ABV, so there’s no TSA volume limit in checked baggage — your constraints are the airline’s weight allowance and safe packing. Spirits between 24% and 70% ABV are capped at 5 L per passenger in unopened retail packaging.

Why is 100 mL the travel size?

Because the carry-on liquids rule in most of the world limits containers to 100 mL (3.4 oz). Packaging lines built for travel retail are therefore developed at 30, 50 and 100 mL.

{
    "@context": "https://schema.org",
    "@type": "Article",
    "headline": "Can You Bring Glass on a Plane?
