What is a fifth of liquor?<\/h2>\n\n<p>A <strong>fifth<\/strong> is the everyday name for a 750 mL bottle in North America. The name is a fossil from the pre-metric era: American spirits were long sold in bottles holding one fifth of a US gallon \u2014 4\/5 of a quart, or about 757.08 mL. When the US moved to mandatory metric standards of fill for spirits on <strong>January 1, 1980<\/strong> (under TTB regulations), the 757 mL fifth was replaced by the 750 mL bottle, a difference of only about 7 mL \u2014 less than a quarter of an ounce.
